Evaluation Question Four

Who would be the audience of your media product?

Image result for psychographics VALs definitionAll magazines should be created with an audience in mind as this influences important decisions such as the design and content of the product. Every different audience has different requirements and attractions.

Magazines use psychographics (VALs) and demographics in order to determine more specifically who their target audience including their lifestyle and interests as well as age, profession and gender.

Here is my research on readership...

As part of my further research, I created a psychographic mood-board as to the likes and interests of my readership. This also demonstrates who my audience is and their demographics.

In summary, the audience to my music magazine are:
  • 15-20 year old (teenage/young adult)
  • Primarily females
  • Lower/Working Class
Their VALs make them:
  • Strivers
  • Experiencers
Their likes include:
  • Indie music
  • Technology
  • Indie bands such as the Arctic Monkeys
  • Fashion including tattoos, dyed hair and leather jackets
  • Magazines such as "KERRANG" and "Under the Radar" which are similar to "HIJACKED" making them more likely to enjoy my product
I selected this group to be my audience because I wanted to make an alternative magazine as opposed to one of a pop genre, of which there are already many. Furthermore, I chose this audience because Experiencers are not mainstream, but are alternative therefore they would be an appropriate target audience. They are also visually stimulated, making them an ideal audience for a front cover; they will be drawn to mine due to the intriguing colour editing.

However, even though I have a specific target audience, I have not isolated the wider population who may also be attracted to my product; it is not so Indie that it intimidates those who do not particularly like this genre. Also, I have not put anything on the cover to deter any group of people; my choice of purple instead of pink was so that I did not alienate males. Therefore, it is quite possible for my product to have a wider audience, which is great.
